Constant current is a simple form of charging batteries, with the current level set at approximately 10% of the maximum battery rating.Charge times are relatively long with the disadvantage that the battery may overheat if it is over-charged, leading to premature battery replacement. This method is suitable for Ni-MH type of batteries.

In this video, we show how to design and simulate battery charging using constant current, step by step from scratch. This is part one of a two part series. This video shows charging of battery using dc voltage source where the charging current is maintained constant. The next video will show you how to discharge the battery and how to maintain constant voltage.

Do refer the above video for any clarifications of any kind. If you still have any queries, post them down in the comments sections and we shall get back to you at the earliest.

This is a clear and practical introduction to constant current battery charging and how it can be designed and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. I like how it explains the core concept in simple terms first—especially the idea of limiting charging current to around 10% of the battery’s maximum rating and the trade-off between safe charging and heat generation.

The step-by-step simulation approach is particularly useful for engineering students because it connects theoretical battery behavior with real MATLAB/Simulink implementation. Breaking it into parts also makes the topic easier to follow, especially when moving from charging to discharging models and constant voltage control.

At the same time, simulations like these can become quite challenging when students are new to Simulink blocks, system modelling,…

Is there a reference paper that back this design?
